He grew up in Grenoble, where he studied medicine. In 2008, Olivier Véran defended a thesis in neurology under the supervision of Laurent Vercueil. Four years later, he earned an Executive Master in Health Policy and Management from Sciences Po Paris. He then worked part-time as a neurologist at the Grenoble-Alpes University Hospital before moving into politics.
In 2015, Olivier Véran was elected regional councilor for Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Two years later, he became a member of parliament for Isère’s first constituency. At the National Assembly, he was appointed General Rapporteur of the Social Affairs Committee, a role he held until 2020. He distinguished himself through his commitment to public health issues, notably by advocating for an end to discrimination against homosexuals in blood donation.
In February 2020, at the height of the pandemic, Olivier Véran was appointed Minister of Solidarity and Health. His tenure was defined by the management of the health crisis, during which he played a key role in implementing government measures to contain the pandemic. In May 2022, he was appointed Minister for Relations with Parliament, then Minister for Democratic Renewal and Government Spokesperson in July 2022.
Re-elected as a deputy in 2022, he nonetheless lost his seat during the snap legislative elections of 2024. After leaving his ministerial role, Olivier Véran announced in March 2024 his return to practicing medicine.
A music enthusiast, he also served as president of the Grenoble University Symphony Orchestra until 2022.
