In 1996, he participated in a pre-Olympic internship with the French team at Auburn University, Alabama. Unfortunately, he missed the selection for the Atlanta Olympics. However, he met David Marsh, a coach at Auburn University and famous swimming coach in Alabama, who offered him a scholarship to the United States to combine swimming and studies. the athlete once again joins the Cercle des Nageurs team.

He won, among other things, 11 French championship titles, a bronze medal at the world swimming championships in the 4x100m relay, and took part in the Olympic Games in Sydney and Athens. In 2005, Romain obtained the post of manager in this French swimming club. On his arrival, he became the sports manager of a former swimmer still little known at that time, Alain Bernard. Alain Bernard has had a high-level international career and has the best French results in this sport, with 2 Olympic titles. It was notably proposed by the French Swimming Federation to be the flag bearer of the French delegation during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in London. Alain is retiring after these Games. But the coach will also train Laure Manaudou, a French swimmer for the FFN who was notably Olympic champion in the 400m freestyle in Athens when she was 17 years old. Laure will string together impressive Olympic results.
